Senior Carly Lawing was awarded the IIDA Carolinas Chapter Shining Star Award for 2020. Carly Lawing will be graduating in May of 2021 with a B.S. in Interior Design from Appalachian State University’s CIDA accredited program. Carly has been involved with App State’s IIDA Student Chapter, Interior Design Club, and currently presides over their ASID Student Chapter. In addition to club involvement in interior design, she also held a leadership position with Appalachian State’s Yosef CrossFit Club. In the spring of 2020, she was selected to partake in the honors program, IDEXlab, which is a cross-disciplinary design-build program within the interior design and building science departments, where she learned valuable professional and interpersonal skills including how to pivot through design during a world pandemic. In the summer of 2019, she even studied abroad in Italy, where she gained international experience in architecture, lighting design, and sketching. Carly’s passion for design comes from her desire to better the human experience in interior spaces by designing with the users’ well-being in mind. Carly knows that every design choice ultimately has an impact on the user, so with thorough predesign research and attention to detail, she aims to benefit the users with each design decision made in every project. Carly greatly values leadership and chooses to view all adversity and success as learning experiences in an effort to constantly grow as a designer.
